While the Other Matter paragraph is a paragraph contained in the auditor's report that refers to a matter other than what has been presented or disclosed in the financial statements that, in the auditor's judgment, are relevant to the financial statement user's understanding of the audit, the auditor's responsibilities, or the auditor's report.

 

The purpose of the auditor to formulate an opinion on the financial statements is to attract the attention of users of financial statements. When the auditor deems it necessary, through additional clear communication in the auditor's report, on:

  1. A matter, even if properly presented or disclosed in the financial statements, that is of such importance that it is fundamental to users' understanding of the financial statements, or

Use of an Emphasis on a matter that is too broad reduces the effectiveness of the auditor's communication on the matter. In addition, to include more information in an Emphasis of Matter paragraph than has been presented or disclosed may imply that it has not been presented or disclosed in the financial statements: therefore, paragraph 5 limits the use of the Emphasis of Matter paragraph to matters that have been presented or disclosed in the financial statements.

 

The inclusion of an emphasis of matter paragraph in the auditor's report does not affect the auditor's opinion. An assertion paragraph is not a substitute for the auditor in expressing an opinion.
